waltz

walking
through the high school hallway
i tend to forget i exist.

all the people pass each other,
looking at each other
but never at the same time.

there is a boy
with a bruised cheekbone
and a girl with a bruised lip.

people walk
in walls of people
and people walk in solitude.

something has happened
is happening
will happen to all of us:

we are
spinning
beneath the tidal wave.

shoulders
brush
against each other

but the waltz
the whispered waltz
the waltz by accident

is a strange one
and a lonely
one.
