We're gearing up for our third edition of KaPow! And what better topic for winter than the weather?

Your next challenge is to write something — anything — about winter.  You could write a short story about a Saint Bernard on a rescue mission in the Alps. You could write a poem praising the brisk air and glittery snowflakes of December. Make a series of memes making fun of people who can’t handle the cold. Consider writing a personal essay about a holiday memory or the best snowball fight you were ever in. When you have something you love, be sure to send it to use so we can publish it on the blog

To submit: email your piece as an attachment or pasted into the body of the message to flashbangwriting@gmail.com. Just put “SUBMISSION: Snow, Ice & Sleet” in the title line, so we know to open it right away! Please include your name, age, and school in your submission. All pieces accepted for publication on the blog will also be considered for publication in KaPow! Snow, Ice & Sleet Edition, scheduled for late winter publication. If your piece is selected, you’ll receive a free copy of the zine (and extra copies are always on sale on our website).

Buy a previous issue of KaPow! We're currently selling both the Poem-A-Thon Edition and the Superhero Edition.

Flashbang! is Best in the 'Burgh!

Sarah and Jeff Boyle

Thanks to the editors at Pittsburgh Magazine who chose Flashbang! Writing Studio as one of their Fresh Takes. We are indeed the best spot for budding Edgar Allan Poes--and budding Emily Dickinsons, Thomas Pynchons, Toni Morrisons, Joan Didions, Stephen Kings, and J.K. Rowlings--to hone their writing skills. Here's the whole roundup of Arts & Culture Fresh Takes

If you yourself are a budding writer, check out our week-long writing classes in zine-making for middle school students and chapbook making for high school students. Both classes will be held at the Union Project in Highland Park this August.

Results of the First Annual Poem-A-Thon

Sarah and Jeff Boyle

Flashbang! Writing Studio is pleased to announce that the First Annual Poem-A-Thon raised a grand total of $2,055 for Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council. We thank each and every one of you who submitted a poem to us, bought an issue of KaPow! Poem-A-Thon Edition, showed up at the East End Book Exchange and let us write a poem for you on our old typewriter, raised money alongside us, or donated just out of the goodness of your heart.

The $2,055 Flashbang! raised will help GPLC provide educational services to over 4500 people in the Pittsburgh Area. Our donation will support: reading, writing, and math education; GED preparation; English as a second language programming; workplace skills development and preparation; family literacy education; a health literacy program; computer skills education; and the OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring program, helping at-risk students in grades K-3.

There's still time to support the poets of the Poem-A-Thon and send some money to GPLC: issues of KaPow! are $6 each and include all the kick-butt poems we published on the blog during National Poetry Month. And Flashbang! is donating all money from sales of KaPow! to GPLC. Buy your copy today
