Summer - High School
All Tied Up With String: Writing and the Art of the Chapbook
Where: The Union Project, Highland Park, Pittsburgh
Who: Rising 10th, 11th, and 12th graders (NOTE: If you've got a rising 9th grader who wants to join this class instead of Ink and Scissors, check in with us first.)
When: August 5-7 and 10-11, from 1-4 in the afternoon.
What: A week-long class in fiction, poetry, personal essays, and the fine art of chapbook making. Participants in All Tied Up With String will create a micro-chapbook, a small, thematically linked mini-collection of creative writing hand-bound with string. For the first three days of the class, students will write on a variety of subjects and in a multitude of forms and then work in small groups to help one another improve their rough drafts. Over the weekend, students are encouraged to choose their favorite pieces from the previous few days, polish them up, and type them out. Finally, on Monday and Tuesday, students will edit one another's work one final time before working on ordering, titling, and hand crafting their micro-chapbooks. Participants will each make micro-chaps in an edition of 15, enough to trade with their classmates and share with friends and family. Flashbang! will also choose a piece from each participant to publish as part of KaPow! All Tied Up With String Edition, and every student will receive one complimentary copy of the zine. Class size is limited to 10 students.
Cost: $195 per student; price includes basic art supplies
