Ink and Scissors: Writing and Zine-Craft
Where: The Union Project, Highland Park, Pittsburgh
Who: Rising 7th, 8th, and 9th graders (NOTE: If you've got a rising 6th grader dying to do some writing, it'll probably be fine--just give us a heads up.)
When: August 12-14 and 17-18, from 1-4 in the afternoon.
What: A week-long class in fiction, poetry, personal essays, and the craft of zine-making. Participants in Ink and Scissors will write, edit, compile, and construct an issue of KaPow! Flashbang! Writing Studio's creative writing zine. For the first three days of the class, students will write on a variety of subjects and in a multitude of forms and then work in small groups to help one another improve their rough drafts. Over the weekend, students are encouraged to choose their favorite piece from the previous few days, polish it up, and type it out. Finally, on Monday and Tuesday, students will edit one another's work one final time before working together to compile and produce an issue of KaPow! The KaPow! Ink and Scissors Edition will include at least one piece by every student who participates in the class. All students will leave the class with 2 copies of the zine, one to keep and one to share. Class size is limited to 10 students.
Cost: $195 per student; price includes basic art supplies
